If Atomic Blonde proves to ignite sufficient box office fireworks, it's easy to see how Charlize Theron could return for more outings as this ruthless and deadly new action heroine. Broughton declared at one point in Atomic Blonde that all she wants is her life back, and now that this mission is complete and the CIA has the List, the agency gives Broughton her wish and allows her to come home to the good ol' U.S. (Her complaints about Kurzfeld's presence at her debriefing were all part of her elaborate cover.) What's more, Broughton's not even British! "Lorraine Broughton" is a fake identity the CIA used to plant her into MI6. Broughton was working for Kurzfeld (whom she has a brief meeting with in West Berlin in the middle of the film) all along. Pretending to give them a copy of the List, Broughton kills Bremovych and his bodyguards before revealing one last shocker: she's actually a triple agent. In the film's centerpiece action sequence, Broughton fights and kills several Russians to protect Spyglass but it's all in vain she fails when Spyglass, already gravely injured from being shot, drowns in the river.Īs Satchel, Broughton had been feeding the Soviets intel on the West, but she has come to Paris to clean up loose ends. As Broughton escorts Spyglass, Percival makes his move and shoots Spyglass in the middle of a crowded public demonstration once he sees Spyglass' family to safety (because Percival couldn't have another copy of the List in the open, which Spyglass could provide). Broughton's mission becomes a quest to help smuggle Marsan, whom the Russians want dead as a traitor, over the Wall. However, a Stasi officer named Spyglass (Eddie Marsan) intends to defect to the West with his family and has seen and memorized the List. Percival kills Bakhtin and takes the List, as Percival has completely gone into business for himself and forsaken his allegiance to MI6. Meanwhile, Bakhtin announces to the Watchmaker that he intends to sell the List. Percival - who works both sides of the Berlin Wall and deals in counterfeit goods - is immediately a suspect to be Satchel, especially when Broughton finds a photograph of Percival and Gasciogine after Percival lied that they had never met. Percival picks Broughton up after she overcomes the Russians. The Russians attempt to kidnap her, though both David Percival and a French agent named Delphine Lasalle (Sofia Boutella) are also on her tail. What the sequel will bring remains to be seen, though fans could certainly expect more of the same intense, gritty action, should 87Eleven and Leitch both return to make the film.As soon as she lands in West Berlin, Broughton's cover is blown. The first movie was a live-action adaptation of the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnson, and followed the story of the aforementioned MI6 agent, Lorraine Broughton, as she went on to round up a list of double agents during the latter years of the Cold War. After all, the film was praised for its visceral action sequences, so having the folks that did John Wick and the action scenes for Birds of Prey will no doubt be a treat for fans. What’s in contention is whether 87Eleven, the production company that did the original Atomic Blonde and the film’s original director, David Leitch, will return to do the principal photography. Aside from reprising her role, Theron will also be serving as producer, alongside Beth Kono, under her production arm, Denver and Delilah Productions. It appears that Charlize Theron will return as super-spy Lorraine Broughton in an upcoming sequel to the 2017 espionage hit, Atomic Blonde.Īccording to Discussing Film, Netflix is reported to have acquired the distributing rights to Atomic Blonde 2, which is currently “in early development”.
